Air quality is a recurring problem in the BCR, as evidenced by several ‘calls to order’ at European level. In 2009, the BCR was the recipient of a formal notice (No 2008/2184) for non-compliance with the daily limit values for fine particulate matter (Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 21 May 2008 on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe). In 2016 and 2018, the BCR and all of the Regions were the recipients of a formal notice (No 2016/2005) for non-compliance with the annual limit values for nitrogen dioxide (Directive 2008/50/EC).
