Related EU Law

- directive 2000/13/EC on the labelling, presentation and advertising of foodstuffs

Explanation

The aim is to provide consumers with systematic information about the brewing place of beers in a context where the development of regional breweries is linked to the desire to consume local products. In 2019, the Bio Agency showed that 54 % of consumers who changed their purchasing habits favoured local products and that 84 % of the population paid attention to where the products they buy come from:https://www.agencebio.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Rapport-Baromètre_Agence-Bio_Spirit-Insight-Edition-2020.pdf. However, some operators have third parties brewing beers whose labelling refers to a local origin. The indication of the name and address of the operator (which according to INCO is not the origin of the product) can then mislead the consumer because the beer is actually produced hundreds of kilometres away. In order to ensure the consumer is correctly informed, provision should be made systematically for the indication of the actual place of brewing.

Summary

The draft decree subject to this notification makes it compulsory to indicate the name of the brewer and the address of the place of brewing on the labelling of beers produced in France or on behalf of French operators.
