Explanation

The origin of a food or its ingredients is the most important factor in buying food for the majority of consumers.

Summary

The main purpose of this Regulation is to inform consumers about the origin of beef, pig, sheep, goat and poultry meat, milk and egg as a primary ingredient in packaged foods. Further to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/775 for the indication of the country of origin or place of provenance of the primary ingredient of a food, OJ L 131, 29.05.2018, p. 8, which provides for the mandatory indication of the origin of the primary ingredient in the case of voluntary presentation of the provenance of the food, a general obligation to indicate the origin of beef, pig, sheep, goat and poultry meat, milk and egg as a primary ingredient in packaged foods is now to be made.
