- Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the provision of food information to consumers: Articles 40, 43, 44 and 45
Pursuant to Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 25 November 2015 on novel foods, only novel foods authorised and included in the Union list may be placed on the market in the European Union. Recently, the European Commission has authorised a number of novel foods that allow insects or their larvae to be used in food.
The amendment of Ministry of Agriculture (FM) Decree No 36/2014 of 17 December 2014 on food information provides that the name of any foodstuff which contains insect protein must be accompanied by an indication in a font size that is at least the same as the font size used for the name of the product, reading ‘Attention! Food contains insect protein’. Furthermore, in order to ensure a clear distinction, marketed foodstuffs containing insect protein should be placed separately on the shelves for customers.
