Current recycling rates in the UK for drinks containers (70%) are lower than other countries that have a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), leaving approximately 4 billion plastic bottles and 2.7 billion cans that are not recycled every year, ending up in litter, landfill or incineration and creating pollution and a demand for virgin materials. A well-designed DRS could achieve recycling rates of 90% or higher.
A Deposit Return Scheme for drinks containers (DRS) introduces a deposit on single-use drinks containers, which is refunded upon return of the empty container.
